# Links, backlinks and Brain

> Link docs and folders, mention people, see what links to a doc, and explore your workspace as a graph

Links connect your docs into a web of related work. Link a doc or folder from anywhere in a doc, see which docs link back, and explore the connections in Brain. Cleve uses the same links when it reads and writes your docs.

## Link a doc or folder

**1. Type \[\[ or @**

In a doc, type `[[`, or type `@` at the start of a line or after a space. A menu opens with your most recent docs.

**2. Search**

Keep typing to search your docs by title. Folders whose name matches appear too, marked **Folder**.

**3. Pick one**

Use the arrow keys and press `Enter`, or click a result. Cleve inserts a link chip with the doc or folder's name.

If no doc matches what you typed, pick **Create doc: …** to create a new doc with that title and link to it in one step.

`[[` only links docs and folders. `@` also lets you [mention people](#mention-people), so its menu groups results under **People** and **Docs and folders**.

### Drag a link in from the sidebar

Drag any doc or folder from the sidebar and drop it into a doc. Cleve inserts a link chip where you drop it. Drops on the title line go just below it, and drops inside a code block are ignored.

### Follow a link

Click a link chip to open it:

* A **doc link** opens that doc. A **Back to previous doc** arrow appears beside the tab so you can return, or press `⌘[` / `Ctrl+[`.
* A **folder link** opens that folder in your docs list.

A link doesn't change who can see a doc. People who open a link to a doc they don't have access to are asked to request access. See [Sharing docs and folders](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/collaboration.md).

## Mention people

Type `@` and pick someone under **People** to mention them in a doc. The mention shows their name.

Who you can mention depends on where the doc lives:

* **People with access to the doc:** its owner, anyone it's shared with, and anyone with access through its folder. The menu marks people you can't see an email for as **Has access to this doc**.
* **Your workspace members**, if the doc is in your workspace. You can search for any member by name or email.
* **Guests** (people a doc was shared with from outside its workspace) can mention only the people who already have access to that doc.

### Assign a to-do

Mention someone inside a to-do list item to assign it to them. While your cursor is in a to-do item, the **People** group is labelled **Assign to**. You can assign an item to more than one person.

To get someone's attention on a specific passage, use a comment instead. See [Comments](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/comments.md).

## See what links to a doc

When other docs link to the one you're reading, a **Linked from** section appears at the bottom of the doc, with a count. Click a title to open that doc.

**Linked from** only lists docs you have access to, and it doesn't appear at all when nothing links to the doc. Folder links don't create backlinks, since a folder isn't a doc.

## Explore your workspace in Brain

Brain shows your docs and folders as an interactive graph, so you can see how your work fits together. Docs sit inside their folders, and lines connect docs that link to each other.

To open it on desktop, click **Open Brain panel** (the brain icon) at the top right of the tab bar, next to the chat button. Brain opens in its own tab beside your doc. Click the icon again (**Close Brain panel**) to close it.

### Find your way around

* **Overview** shows your whole workspace. Zoom in to see doc names.
* **Click a folder** to zoom into it and see the docs inside.
* **Click a doc** to select it in the graph and open it beside Brain.
* **Back to overview** returns to the whole workspace.
* Use **Zoom in**, **Zoom out**, and **Recenter**, or your mouse wheel or trackpad, and drag to move around.
* With Brain open, hover a doc in the sidebar to highlight it in the graph, or click it to open it and focus it in Brain.

The graph is also keyboard accessible: use the arrow keys to move between items and `Enter` to open one.

Brain only shows docs you can access, and your [Memory](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/memory.md) doc isn't shown. In very large workspaces, the overview shows part of your workspace; click a folder to see what's inside it.

## Cleve and links

Cleve works with links too:

* **Writing:** when Cleve creates or edits a doc, it links to your other docs and folders the same way, for example when you ask for an index or a table of contents. These links create backlinks and show up in Brain like any other.
* **Keeping:** when Cleve edits a doc that already has links, it keeps them as they are.

Try: *"Create an index doc that links to every doc in my Research folder, grouped by topic."*
