# Memory

> What Cleve remembers about you, and how to view, edit, or clear it

Memory lets Cleve remember things about you across conversations: your role, what you're working on, and how you like things done. Tell Cleve once that you prefer British spelling or short bullet points, and it remembers next time.

## How memory works

Your memory is a single doc called **Memory**. Cleve reads it at the start of every conversation and lets it shape its replies, such as their tone and format, without quoting it back to you.

When Cleve learns something lasting about you, it adds it to the doc and keeps it short and organised by topic. That includes:

* Facts about you, such as your name, job, interests, and writing style
* Preferences you state, such as a tone, a format, or a way of working

When it saves something, Cleve may briefly confirm it, for example *"Noted, I'll remember that."* You can also ask directly: *"Remember that our fiscal year starts in April."*

Cleve can only update memory in **Edit mode**. In Chat mode it still reads your memory but doesn't change it. See [Chat mode and Edit mode](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/ai-chat.md#chat-mode-and-edit-mode).

Memory belongs to your account, so the same memory is used in every workspace you belong to.

## Memory settings

Open **Settings → Memory**.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Memory** | Turn memory on or off. When it's off, Cleve neither reads nor updates your memory. Memory is on by default. |
| **Show in docs** | Show the Memory doc in your docs list in the sidebar. It's hidden by default. |
| **View & edit memory** | Click **Open** to open your Memory doc. |
| **Clear memory** | Click **Clear** to reset memory to a blank slate. |

## View and edit your memory

1. Go to **Settings → Memory**.
2. Next to **View & edit memory**, click **Open**.
3. Edit the doc like any other doc.

Anything you write in the Memory doc is included in every conversation, so you can add facts or instructions yourself. Delete anything that's wrong or out of date. Cleve works from whatever the doc says.

> [!TIP]
>
> Write lasting preferences as plain statements, such as *"I write for a technical audience. Avoid marketing language."* Keep task-specific instructions in the conversation or in a [skill](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/skills.md) instead.

## Clear your memory

1. Go to **Settings → Memory**.
2. Next to **Clear memory**, click **Clear**, then confirm.

This replaces your Memory doc with a blank one. Everything Cleve has learned about you is removed and can't be recovered. To pause memory without losing it, turn **Memory** off instead.

## What Cleve knows without memory

Even with memory off, Cleve knows a few things in every conversation:

* **Your name and email address** from your account, so it can address you by name and pick up context such as your company from your email domain.
* **Today's date and time** in your time zone.
* **The docs you attach** to the conversation, and any folder you focus it on.

It reads your other docs only when it searches for or opens them while working on your request.

## Privacy

* Your Memory doc is private to you, like any doc you haven't shared.
* Turning memory off stops Cleve from using it straight away.
* Like the rest of your chats and docs, your memory is never used to train AI models. See [Privacy and security](https://docs.cleve.ai/reference/privacy.md).
