# Skills

> Save instructions you use often and run them in chat with /

A **skill** is a set of instructions for Cleve that you can reuse. Instead of typing *"Review this like a senior editor: check structure first, then clarity, then tone…"* every time, save it once as a skill and run it with `/` in chat.

Skills can come from three places:

* **Your own.** Write a skill in a few seconds, or ask Cleve to write one for you.
* **The marketplace.** Install skills other people have published.
* **The open skills ecosystem.** Install any skill in the open `SKILL.md` format, from GitHub or [skills.sh](https://skills.sh).

New accounts start with a few of Cleve's own skills already installed.

## Run a skill

1. In the chat message box, type `/`.
2. Pick a skill from **Recent**, **My Skills**, or **Installed**. Keep typing to filter the list, use the arrow keys, and press `Enter` to choose.
3. The skill appears as a badge (for example `/Code Reviewer`) at the start of the message box. Add anything you want to say, or send it as it is.

Cleve follows the skill's instructions for that message. The message shows a skill badge you can hover to see what the skill does.

* To browse every skill, click **See all** in the `/` list, or click **+** in the message box and choose **Add skill**.
* To remove the skill before sending, press `Backspace` in an empty message box.
* If a skill is set to a specific model, choosing it switches the chat to that model.

## Create a skill

You can create a skill from any of these places:

* **Settings → Skills**, then **Create Skill**
* The **+** button at the top of the `/` list in chat
* **Marketplace** in the sidebar, then the **New skill** card under **My Skills**

Fill in:

| Field | What it's for |
| - | - |
| **Name** (required) | What you'll pick from the `/` list, for example *Code Reviewer*. |
| **Description** | A short line on what the skill does. It shows in the list and on the skill's badge. |
| **Prompt** (required) | The instructions Cleve follows when you run the skill. |
| **Model** | Leave as **Default (user's choice)** to use whatever model the chat is on, or pick a model this skill should always use. |
| **Category** | An optional label such as *Writing* or *Code*, used to filter the marketplace. |
| **Publish to marketplace** | Share the skill with the Cleve community. See [Publish a skill](#publish-a-skill). |

### Write a good prompt

* Say what role Cleve should take and what the result should look like.
* Describe the steps in order if the order matters.
* Include an example of good output if you have one.
* Keep it general enough to work on different docs. Whatever you type when you run the skill fills in the specifics.

## Edit or delete a skill

Open **Settings → Skills**. It lists the skills you've created and installed.

* Click the pencil to edit a skill you created, then **Save Changes**.
* Click the trash icon to delete a skill you created. Deleting is permanent, and it also removes the skill for anyone who installed it.

You can also click a skill on the **Marketplace** page and choose **Edit**.

## Install skills from the marketplace

1. Click **Marketplace** in the sidebar, and make sure the **Skills** tab is selected.
2. Search, or filter by category. Results include skills from the Cleve community and from skills.sh.
3. Click a skill to see what it does, then click **Install Skill** (or **Install** for a skills.sh skill).

Installed skills appear under **Installed** when you type `/` in chat.

To remove one, open it in the marketplace and click **Uninstall**. Uninstalling only removes it from your account.

### Skills from skills.sh

Before you install a skills.sh skill, its page shows its instructions, its files, and any **Security audits** from skills.sh's audit partners. If an audit flags the skill as dangerous, the button changes to **Install anyway**.

> [!WARNING]
>
> A skill's instructions run with access to your docs, and in Edit mode Cleve can act on them. Read the instructions before you install a skill you don't trust, and don't install a skill an audit has flagged unless you understand why.

## Install a skill from GitHub or a link

1. Go to **Settings → Skills** and click **Install from URL**.
2. Under **From URL**, enter a GitHub repository (for example `anthropics/skills`), a GitHub folder link, a skills.sh page, or a direct link to a `SKILL.md` file. Click **Look up**.
3. If the source contains several skills, tick the ones you want. Click **Review instructions** to read a skill before you install it.
4. Click **Install**.

You can also choose **Paste SKILL.md** and paste a skill's contents directly.

Installing from the same source again updates the skill in place. Skills you install this way show where they came from in **Settings → Skills**.

Some skills bundle scripts and show **Has scripts**. Cleve doesn't run bundled scripts, but the skill's instructions still work.

## Ask Cleve to manage skills

In chat, you can ask Cleve to do any of this for you. For example:

* *"Turn the review instructions I just gave you into a skill called Editor."*
* *"Update my Editor skill so it also checks headings."*
* *"Find a skill for writing release notes and install it."*
* *"Install the pdf skill from anthropics/skills."*

Cleve needs **Edit mode** to create, change, install, or remove skills. It asks for your approval before it deletes a skill or installs one from a link. See [Chat with Cleve](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/ai-chat.md#approve-sensitive-actions).

## Publish a skill

Publishing shares a skill on the marketplace, where anyone using Cleve can find and install it, and makes it discoverable on cleve.ai.

* **To publish:** edit the skill and turn on **Publish to marketplace**, or ask Cleve to publish it.
* **To unpublish:** turn the switch off. New people can no longer find it, but anyone who already installed it keeps it.

Published skills show a globe icon in **Settings → Skills**. In the marketplace, your unpublished skills show a **Draft** badge under **My Skills**. Check a skill's prompt for anything private before you publish it. For sharing docs as Resources, see [Publishing](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/publishing.md).

## Explore skills from the setup checklist

The **Set up workspace** checklist in the sidebar includes **Explore skills**. It's ticked off the first time you open the **Marketplace**. See [Set up your workspace](https://docs.cleve.ai/onboarding.md).
