# REST API Source: https://docs.cleve.ai/developers/api Programmatic access to your Cleve notes and folders ## Overview The Cleve REST API lets you read and write notes and folders programmatically. **Base URL**: `https://app.cleve.ai/api/v1` **OpenAPI spec**: [`https://www.cleve.ai/openapi.json`](https://www.cleve.ai/openapi.json) (also served at `https://app.cleve.ai/api/v1/openapi.json`). Every operation has an `operationId`, typed parameters and response schemas, so you can generate a client or hand it to an LLM as function-calling tools. Every success response wraps its payload in `data`: ```json theme={null} { "data": { "noteId": "abc123" } } ``` ## Authentication All requests require a personal API key passed as a Bearer token: ```bash theme={null} Authorization: Bearer ``` ### Getting an API Key 1. Open Cleve and go to **Settings → Developer** 2. Click **Manage** next to API keys 3. Create a new key in your Clerk user profile API keys are personal and scoped to your account. Keep them secret — anyone with your key can read and modify your notes. ## Notes ### List Notes ```http theme={null} GET /api/v1/notes ``` **Query parameters** | Parameter | Type | Description | | - | - | - | | `folderId` | string | Filter to a specific folder | | `pinnedOnly` | boolean | Return only pinned notes | **Example** ```bash theme={null} curl -H "Authorization: Bearer " \ "https://app.cleve.ai/api/v1/notes" ``` *** ### Create a Note ```http theme={null} POST /api/v1/notes ``` **Body** (JSON) | Field | Type | Description | | - | - | - | | `title` | string | Note title | | `content` | string | Note body (markdown) | | `folderId` | string | Folder to place the note in | | `isPinned` | boolean | Whether to pin the note | **Example** ```bash theme={null} curl -X POST \ -H "Authorization: Bearer " \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"title": "Meeting notes", "content": "## Agenda\n\n- Item 1"}' \ "https://app.cleve.ai/api/v1/notes" ``` **Response** ```json theme={null} { "data": { "noteId": "abc123" } } ``` *** ### Get a Note ```http theme={null} GET /api/v1/notes/:noteId ``` Returns the full note object including title, content, and metadata. **Example** ```bash theme={null} curl -H "Authorization: Bearer " \ "https://app.cleve.ai/api/v1/notes/abc123" ``` *** ### Update a Note ```http theme={null} PATCH /api/v1/notes/:noteId ``` **Body** (JSON, all fields optional) | Field | Type | Description | | - | - | - | | `title` | string | New title | | `content` | string | New body (markdown) | | `isPinned` | boolean | Pin or unpin | | `isPublic` | boolean | Enable or disable link sharing | | `folderId` | string \| null | Move to folder, or `null` to unfile | **Example** ```bash theme={null} curl -X PATCH \ -H "Authorization: Bearer " \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"isPinned": true}' \ "https://app.cleve.ai/api/v1/notes/abc123" ``` *** ### Delete a Note ```http theme={null} DELETE /api/v1/notes/:noteId ``` Permanently deletes the note. List notes with GET /api/v1/notes and folders with GET /api/v1/folders; every route is in https://app.cleve.ai/api/v1/openapi.json.", "docs": "https://docs.cleve.ai/developers/api" } ``` Unknown paths under `/api/v1` return the same JSON `404`. ## Related Connect AI agents to Cleve via the Model Context Protocol. API access is available on all plans. # MCP Server Source: https://docs.cleve.ai/developers/mcp Connect Claude, Cursor, Codex and other agents to your Cleve workspace via the Model Context Protocol ## Overview Cleve exposes an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server at: ``` https://app.cleve.ai/mcp ``` Once connected, your agent gets read/write access to the same workspace your team uses — notes, folders, skills, memory, and org context. Authentication is handled via OAuth on the first connection. You'll be prompted to sign in with your Cleve account; no manual token management required. ## Quick Start Run this in your terminal: ```bash theme={null} claude mcp add cleve --transport http https://app.cleve.ai/mcp ``` Add to your `.cursor/mcp.json`: ```json theme={null} { "mcpServers": { "cleve": { "type": "http", "url": "https://app.cleve.ai/mcp" } } } ``` Add to your Claude Desktop configuration file: ```json theme={null} { "mcpServers": { "cleve": { "type": "http", "url": "https://app.cleve.ai/mcp" } } } ``` Run this in your terminal: ```bash theme={null} codex mcp add cleve --transport http https://app.cleve.ai/mcp ``` After the first connection, you'll be redirected through the Cleve OAuth flow. Once authorised, the token is stored by your client and reused automatically. You can also find these snippets in **Settings → Developer → MCP Server** inside the Cleve app. ## Available Tools Every notes, folder, and skill tool also accepts an optional `organization` parameter: the id or exact name of the workspace to act in. The `organization` parameter on the call, matched exactly by id or by name (case-insensitive). 2. The workspace saved for this MCP client with `cleve_switch_org`. Selections are stored per client, so Claude Code and Cursor can target different workspaces on the same account, and they persist until you switch again. 3. Your only workspace, if you belong to just one. If you belong to several workspaces and none of the above applies, the tool returns an error listing your workspaces instead of guessing. Agents also receive this guidance in the server's instructions when they connect, so they know to call `cleve_list_orgs` first. ## Comments These tools operate on Cleve comment threads, not arbitrary API requests. Each accepts the optional `organization` parameter described in [Workspaces](#workspaces). They change comments or thread status, not the note's document content. ### Add a Comment `cleve_add_comment` creates an AI comment anchored to a passage in a note. It requires: * `noteId`: the ID of an accessible note. * `quote`: text copied verbatim from the note. It must match exactly once; a missing or ambiguous passage returns an error. A longer quote can disambiguate repeated text. * `body`: the comment text, in plain prose. Read the note with `cleve_view_note` or `cleve_read_note` before choosing the quote. The passage is highlighted in the editor, and the thread appears in the comments sidebar. A successful response includes `success: true`, the created `threadId`, and `quotedText`. ### Reply to a Comment `cleve_reply_to_comment` adds a reply to a comment thread and leaves it open. It requires `threadId` and `body`. Obtain the thread ID from `cleve_list_note_comments` or `cleve_view_note`. A successful response contains `success: true` and the `threadId`. Replying does not edit the note or mark the thread resolved. ### Resolve a Comment `cleve_resolve_comment` marks a thread resolved. It requires `threadId` and optionally accepts `body` for a closing reply. A successful response contains `success: true` and the `threadId`. Resolving does not perform the edit requested in a comment. If an edit is needed, make it with a note-editing tool before resolving the thread. ## Installing Skills `cleve_install_skill` supports two sources: * **Cleve marketplace:** pass `skillId` from `cleve_search_marketplace` to install that skill. * **SKILL.md import:** pass `url` containing a GitHub `owner/repo`, a GitHub repository or skill-folder URL, a skills.sh page, or a direct HTTPS link to a SKILL.md file. Cleve downloads and imports the skill into your account. For a repository containing multiple skills, `slugs` selects the skill names to import; omit it to import all valid discovered skills. `slugs` only filters repository-based imports. Provide either `skillId` or `url`. If both are supplied, `url` takes precedence. A call with neither returns an error. The marketplace path returns a success message; the URL-import path returns details of the imported skills. Installation changes saved skill data; URL imports also fetch content from the supplied external source. Installing a skill does not execute its instructions. Treat third-party skill content as untrusted and review it before use. Like other skill tools, this tool accepts the optional `organization` parameter. ## Fetching URLs `cleve_fetch_url` reads a public HTTP or HTTPS URL. It extracts the main content of HTML pages as Markdown and returns text-based files as text. Binary files return a description rather than extracted document content. It does not save a note or send a write request to Cleve. Parameters: * `url` (required): an absolute HTTP or HTTPS URL. * `maxLength`: maximum returned content characters, default `5000`, capped at `50000`. * `startIndex`: character offset, default `0`. Use the returned `nextStartIndex` to request another page of a long result. * `raw`: default `false`; set to `true` to return response text without HTML-to-Markdown extraction. Binary files still return a description. The returned text includes the requested URL, final URL after redirects when different, content type, title when available, total content length, and pagination information. Downloaded content is explicitly marked as untrusted data, not instructions. Private, local, and internal network destinations are blocked, including redirects to those destinations. This tool does not use your Cleve session to sign in to external websites and has no caller-supplied headers, HTTP method, or request-body parameter. It is a web-content reader, not a general-purpose REST API client. ## Authentication Details The MCP server uses **OAuth 2.0** via Clerk. On first connect: 1. Your client opens the Cleve authorization URL 2. You sign in with your Cleve account 3. Your client stores the access token and sends it as a Bearer header on every request The server reads your user identity and workspace memberships from the token. You do not need an API key for MCP — it's separate from the REST API key system. If you belong to multiple workspaces, use `cleve_list_orgs` to see them and either pass `organization` on each call or use `cleve_switch_org` to save a default for the client you are connecting from. ## Example Prompts ``` Search my notes for anything related to "product roadmap" and summarize the key themes. ``` ``` Create a folder called "2026 Planning" and move all notes with "Q1" in the title into it. ``` ``` Read my memory note and tell me what context you already have about me. ``` ``` Find the brand guide note and quote the tone-of-voice rules verbatim. ``` # AI Chat Assistant Source: https://docs.cleve.ai/features/ai-chat Context-aware AI that understands your writings and helps you create ## Overview Cleve's AI Chat is a context-aware assistant that can reference your entire knowledge base. Think of Ideas as your scratch pad—a frictionless way to jot down quotes, snippets, fleeting thoughts, or concepts that need more time to develop. ## What Are Ideas For? Ideas bridge the gap between random thoughts and structured content: * **Quick captures** when inspiration strikes * **Quotes** from articles, books, or conversations * **Unformed concepts** that need more thinking * **Voice notes** transcribed to text * **Research snippets** you want to remember * **Todo items** and reminders Unlike Writings (which have rich formatting and structure), Ideas are intentionally simple—just text and a category. ## Creating Ideas ### Quick Create 1. Open the **Ideas panel** from the sidebar 2. Click **"New Idea"** or press `Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + I` 3. Type your thought 4. Press **Enter** to save That's it. No formatting, no titles, no friction. ### Voice Capture 1. Click the **microphone icon** in the Ideas input 2. Speak your thought 3. Cleve transcribes it automatically 4. Review and save Voice capture is perfect for: * Capturing thoughts while walking or commuting * Hands-free idea logging * Faster input than typing ## Organizing Ideas ### Assigning Categories Group ideas by project or theme: 1. Create or select an idea 2. Click the **Category** dropdown 3. Assign to a category (e.g., "Blog Ideas", "Research Notes") Ideas inherit category permissions—if you share a category, collaborators see ideas within it. ### Filtering by Category * Click a category in the sidebar to show only ideas in that category * Use **"All Ideas"** to view everything * **Search** to filter by keywords ### Bulk Operations Select multiple ideas to: * **Move to a different category** * **Delete** in bulk * **Export** as plain text or CSV Hold `Shift` to select a range, or `Cmd/Ctrl` to select individual ideas. ## Idea Lifecycle Ideas are meant to be temporary—a stepping stone to something more. ### Promote to Writing When an idea is ready to expand: 1. Right-click the idea 2. Select **"Convert to Writing"** 3. The idea becomes a new writing with the idea text as content 4. Continue developing it in the full editor ### Archive Old Ideas Keep your workspace clean: 1. Select ideas you no longer need 2. Click **Archive** (or delete permanently) 3. Archived ideas are hidden but recoverable ## Real-Time Sync Ideas sync instantly across all your devices using **Supabase real-time subscriptions**. ### What This Means * Capture an idea on your phone → see it instantly on desktop * Collaborators see new ideas in shared categories immediately * Offline changes sync when connection returns No refresh needed—changes appear live. ## Search Integration Ideas are searchable just like writings. ### Finding Ideas Press `Cmd/Ctrl + /` to open global search: * **Full-text search**: Match keywords in idea content * **Semantic search**: Find conceptually related ideas using AI embeddings * **Filter by type**: Show only ideas (not writings) Ideas appear in search results with a 💡 icon to distinguish them from writings. ## Using Ideas in AI Chat Ideas can be used as context in AI conversations. ### Referencing Ideas Enable **Ideas context** in the AI chat: 1. Toggle **"Include Ideas"** in chat settings 2. The AI can now reference your ideas when responding 3. Ask questions like: * "Summarize my ideas tagged 'marketing'" * "Combine my ideas about AI into a blog outline" * "What are common themes in my recent ideas?" ### Drag-and-Drop to Chat Drag an idea from the panel directly into the chat input to add it as context for a specific prompt. ## Ideas Panel Layout The Ideas panel is dockable and resizable within the workspace. ### Panel Controls * **New Idea**: Quick-create button * **Search**: Filter ideas by keywords * **Category Filter**: Show ideas from specific categories * **Sort Options**: By date, alphabetical, or manual ordering * **View Modes**: List or grid view ### Keyboard Navigation | Action | Shortcut | | - | - | | New idea | `Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + I` | | Delete selected | `Backspace` or `Delete` | | Select all | `Cmd/Ctrl + A` | | Focus search | `Cmd/Ctrl + F` | ## Collaboration Ideas in shared categories are visible to collaborators. ### Permissions * **Read access**: View ideas, cannot create or edit * **Write access**: Full create, edit, delete permissions ### Activity Feed See who added or modified ideas: * User avatars show who created each idea * Timestamps indicate when ideas were captured * Activity log (Pro/Max plans) tracks all changes ## Export & Backup Export ideas for external use or backup. ### Export Formats * **Plain text (.txt)**: One idea per line * **CSV**: Structured data with metadata (date, category, etc.) * **Markdown (.md)**: Formatted with headings per category * **JSON**: Developer-friendly structured export ### Auto-Backup Ideas are automatically backed up: * **Real-time** to the cloud database * **Locally** to IndexedDB for offline access * **Version snapshots** (Pro/Max plans) ## Use Cases ### Content Creator Workflow 1. With both traditional keyword search and AI-powered semantic search, you can discover connections and insights you might have missed. ## Opening Search ### Keyboard Shortcut Press `Cmd/Ctrl + /` from anywhere in Cleve to open the search overlay. ### Search Bar Click the search icon in the top navigation or use the search input in any panel. ## Search Types Cleve offers two powerful search modes that work together. ### Full-Text Keyword Search Traditional search that matches exact words and phrases. **How it works:** * Searches through titles, content, and metadata * Matches exact keywords (case-insensitive) * Highlights matching terms in results * Fast and precise **Best for:** * Finding specific quotes or references * Searching for names, dates, or numbers * Locating documents by title **Example queries:** ``` "product roadmap" customer feedback 2024 meeting notes ``` ### Semantic Search AI-powered search that understands meaning, not just keywords. **How it works:** * Your content is embedded as vectors using AI * Your query is also converted to a vector * Finds content with similar meaning * Discovers conceptually related content **Best for:** * Exploring related concepts * Finding content you can't remember exact wording for * Discovering connections between ideas **Example queries:** ``` "strategies for improving team communication" (finds writings about collaboration, meetings, async work, etc.) "dealing with procrastination" (finds content about productivity, motivation, focus) ``` Semantic search works even if the exact keywords don't appear in your content—it understands concepts and context. ## Search Results ### What's Included Search returns results from: * **📝 Writings**: Full documents with titles and content * **💡 Ideas**: Quick captures and notes * **🗂️ Categories**: Folder names and descriptions Each result shows: * **Title or preview** of the content * **Snippet** with highlighted matches * **Creation date** and last modified * **Category** it belongs to * **Relevance score** (semantic search only) ### Result Actions Click a result to: * **Open the writing** in the editor * **View the idea** in context * **Navigate to the category** Right-click for additional options: * Open in new panel * Copy link to content * Share content ## Advanced Search ### Filters Refine your search with filters: * **Type**: Writings only, Ideas only, or All * **Category**: Search within specific categories * **Date Range**: Created or modified within timeframe * **Author**: In shared categories, filter by who created it ### Search Operators Use operators for precise searches: | Operator | Example | Description | | - | - | - | | `"exact match"` | `"customer feedback"` | Find exact phrase | | `author:name` | `author:john` | Filter by author | | `category:name` | `category:blog` | Search specific category | | `created:date` | `created:2024-01` | Filter by creation date | ### Combining Operators ``` "user research" category:product created:2024-02 ``` Finds writings with the exact phrase "user research" in the "product" category created in February 2024. ## Pagination & Load More Search returns the top 20 most relevant results initially. **To see more:** * Scroll to bottom of results * Click **"Load More"** to fetch the next page * Results load incrementally for performance Large result sets are paginated to keep search fast and responsive. ## Search Performance ### Indexing Your content is automatically indexed: * **Instant indexing**: New writings and ideas are searchable immediately * **Background embedding**: Semantic vectors are generated asynchronously * **Incremental updates**: Only changed content is re-indexed ### Speed Optimization Search is optimized for speed: * **\< 100ms** response time for keyword search * **\< 500ms** for semantic search * **Client-side caching** for repeated queries * **Debounced input** to avoid excessive requests ## Search in AI Chat Use search context in AI conversations. ### Enabling Search Context Toggle **"Web Search"** in AI chat settings to: * Search the internet for real-time information * Pull in external sources and citations * Combine your knowledge with current data Toggle **"Writings" or "Ideas"** to search your content as AI context. ### Search-Based Prompts ``` "What did I write about AI in Q1 2024?" → AI searches your writings, summarizes findings "Find ideas related to marketing campaigns" → AI retrieves and organizes relevant ideas ``` ## Privacy & Data ### What's Indexed * **Content**: Full text of writings and ideas * **Metadata**: Titles, dates, categories, authors * **Embeddings**: AI-generated semantic vectors (hashed) ### What's NOT Indexed * **Private writings** are only searchable by you * **Shared content** respects permission levels * **Deleted content** is removed from search immediately ### Search Privacy * All search queries are **private** to your account * Search history is **not logged** or tracked * Semantic embeddings are **one-way hashes** (can't be reversed to original text) ## Mobile Search Search works seamlessly on mobile devices: * **Swipe down** from top to open search * **Voice search**: Speak your query instead of typing * **Quick filters**: Tap to filter by type or category * **Offline search**: Search cached content even without connection ## Use Cases ### Research & Reference ``` Find all mentions of "competitor analysis" across writings → Gather research for a new report ``` ### Content Repurposing ``` Search for "social media tips" → Find past writings to repurpose into new content ``` ### Knowledge Discovery ``` Semantic search: "strategies for growing an audience" → Discover writings about marketing, community building, content creation ``` ### Collaboration ``` Search in shared category: "meeting notes" → Find all team meeting summaries ``` ## Best Practices ### Writing SEO-Friendly Content To make your content more searchable: 1. **Use clear titles**: First H1 becomes the searchable title 2. **Add keywords naturally**: Include terms you'd search for 3. **Structure content**: Headings and lists improve relevance 4. **Link related writings**: Builds semantic connections ### Effective Search Queries **Do:** * Use specific keywords for targeted results * Try semantic search for exploratory queries * Combine filters to narrow results * Use quotes for exact phrases **Don't:** * Search for very generic single words (use filters instead) * Expect semantic search to find exact quotes * Forget to check filters if results seem off ### Organizing for Discoverability * **Consistent category naming**: Makes filtering easier * **Descriptive titles**: Improve search relevance * **Tag with keywords**: Add relevant terms to metadata ## Troubleshooting ### No Results Found **Solutions:** * Check spelling and try alternative phrasing * Remove filters to broaden search * Try semantic search instead of keyword search * Verify content exists and isn't deleted ### Irrelevant Results **Solutions:** * Use exact match with quotes `"like this"` * Add more specific keywords * Use category or date filters * Switch from semantic to keyword search ### Slow Search Performance **Solutions:** * Check internet connection * Clear browser cache * Reduce result limit with filters * Contact support if persistent ## Related Documentation Use search results as context in AI conversations. Built on [TipTap](https://tiptap.dev), the editor combines rich formatting capabilities with powerful features like auto-save, offline support, and document linking. ## Rich Text Editor ### Supported Formatting The editor supports all essential formatting options: * **Text Styling**: Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, code * **Headings**: H1 through H6 for document structure * **Lists**: Ordered (numbered) and unordered (bulleted) lists * **Links**: Inline hyperlinks with keyboard shortcuts * **Code Blocks**: Syntax-highlighted code with language detection * **Quotes**: Blockquotes for citations and emphasis * **Horizontal Rules**: Visual separators between sections ### Keyboard Shortcuts for Formatting | Action | macOS | Windows/Linux | | - | - | - | | Bold | `Cmd + B` | `Ctrl + B` | | Italic | `Cmd + I` | `Ctrl + I` | | Underline | `Cmd + U` | `Ctrl + U` | | Code | `Cmd + E` | `Ctrl + E` | | Link | `Cmd + K` | `Ctrl + K` | | Heading 1 | `Cmd + Alt + 1` | `Ctrl + Alt + 1` | | Heading 2 | `Cmd + Alt + 2` | `Ctrl + Alt + 2` | Use Markdown syntax while typing! Type `# ` for H1, `## ` for H2, `- ` for bullet lists, etc. ## Auto-Save System Never lose your work again. Cleve's intelligent auto-save system ensures your content is always protected. ### How It Works * **Automatic Saving**: Changes save automatically after **750ms** of inactivity * **Local Persistence**: Writes to **IndexedDB** in your browser for offline access * **Cloud Sync**: Syncs to the server when connection is available * **Visual Feedback**: Saving indicator shows save status (Saving... → Saved) ### Manual Save While auto-save handles most scenarios, you can force a save anytime: ``` Cmd/Ctrl + S ``` This is useful when you want to ensure changes are committed before closing the browser. ## Offline Mode Cleve works even without an internet connection. ### Offline Capabilities * ✅ **Create new writings** locally * ✅ **Edit existing writings** that were previously loaded * ✅ **Auto-save to IndexedDB** for persistence * ✅ **View writings** from local cache * ⏸️ **Sync paused** until connection returns ### Background Sync When your connection returns: 1. Cleve detects the network is back 2. Queued changes upload automatically 3. Conflicts are resolved (last-write-wins with timestamps) 4. You're notified when sync completes Offline changes are stored in your browser's IndexedDB. Clearing browser data will delete offline drafts. ## Document Linking Create bidirectional links between your writings to build a connected knowledge graph. ### Creating Links 1. Type `[[` in the editor 2. A suggestion menu appears with your other writings 3. Select a writing to create a link 4. The link appears inline: \[\[Writing Title]] ### Backlinks When you link to another document: * The linked document automatically tracks the **backlink** * View all documents linking to the current one in the metadata panel * Build a web of interconnected ideas ### Use Cases * Reference related research in your current writing * Connect series of articles or chapter-based content * Build a personal wiki with cross-referenced notes ## Word & Character Counter Track your writing progress with real-time statistics. ### Displayed Metrics * **Word Count**: Total words in the document * **Character Count**: Total characters (with and without spaces) * **Reading Time**: Estimated time to read (based on 200 WPM) ### Where to Find It The counter displays in the **editor footer** and updates instantly as you type. ## Title Extraction The first heading (H1) in your document automatically becomes the document title. ```markdown theme={null} # My Amazing Article This becomes the title shown in the sidebar and search results. ``` If no H1 exists, the document is titled "Untitled" until you add one. ## Zen Mode Enter a distraction-free fullscreen writing environment. ### Activating Zen Mode ``` Cmd/Ctrl + \ ``` Or click the **Zen Mode** button in the toolbar. ### What Zen Mode Does * **Hides all panels**: AI chat, ideas, categories—everything disappears * **Fullscreen editor**: Your writing fills the entire screen * **Minimal UI**: Only the editor and essential controls remain * **Focus timer** (optional): Track your focused writing time ### Exiting Zen Mode Press `Escape` or `Cmd/Ctrl + \` again to return to normal workspace. Combine zen mode with the writing timer to create focused Pomodoro-style writing sessions. ## Writing Timer Track how long you've been writing during a session. ### Starting the Timer 1. Click the **Timer** icon in the toolbar 2. The timer starts counting up from 00:00:00 3. It appears as an overlay in the corner ### Use Cases * **Pomodoro technique**: Write for focused 25-minute sprints * **Daily writing goals**: Track time spent writing each day * **Flow state tracking**: See how long you can maintain focus The timer pauses automatically when you switch away from the writing tab. ## Public vs. Private Writings Control who can see your content. ### Privacy Settings * **Private** (default): Only you can see the writing * **Public**: Anyone with the link can view (but not edit) ### Making a Writing Public 1. Open the writing 2. Click the **Share** button in the toolbar 3. Toggle **"Make Public"** 4. Copy the public URL to share ### Access Control * Public writings are **read-only** for viewers * Only the author can edit public writings * Public writings are indexed by search engines (optional setting) Be careful when making writings public. Once shared, anyone with the link can view the content. ## Version History See how your writing has evolved over time. ### Viewing History 1. Click the **History** button in the toolbar 2. Browse previous versions by timestamp 3. Preview changes with a diff view 4. Restore an older version if needed ### What's Tracked * **Every auto-save** creates a version snapshot * **Timestamps** for each version * **Change diffs** showing what was added or removed Version history is available on **Pro** and **Max** plans. Free and Starter plans keep the last 7 days only. ## Draft Recovery Accidentally closed your browser mid-edit? No problem. ### How Draft Recovery Works 1. Every change saves to **IndexedDB** locally 2. If you close the browser, drafts persist 3. When you return, Cleve offers to **restore unsaved changes** 4. Accept the prompt to recover your work This protects against: * Browser crashes * Accidental tab closures * Computer shutdowns * Network interruptions ## Advanced Features ### Content Blocks Structure your writing with reusable content blocks: * **Callout Boxes**: Highlight important information * **Image Embeds**: Drag-and-drop images directly into the editor * **Embedded Media**: YouTube videos, tweets, and more * **Tables**: Create data tables with formatting ### Collaborative Editing When multiple users edit the same writing: * **Live cursors** show where collaborators are typing * **Conflict resolution** prevents overwrites * **User avatars** indicate who's currently editing See [Collaboration](/features/collaboration) for more details. ### Export Options Export your writings in multiple formats: * **Markdown (.md)**: Plain text with Markdown syntax * **HTML**: Formatted web-ready output * **PDF**: Print-ready document * **Plain Text (.txt)**: Stripped of all formatting ## Best Practices ### Organizing Your Writings 1. **Use categories** to group related content 2. **Add descriptive titles** with H1 headings 3. **Link related writings** to build connections 4. **Tag important concepts** for easier searching ### Writing Workflow Tips 1. **Start in zen mode** to focus without distractions 2. **Use ideas panel** to capture thoughts before writing 3. **Set writing timers** for accountability 4. **Reference AI chat** when you need inspiration 5. **Review version history** to track progress over time ### Performance Optimization * **Long documents** (10,000+ words): Consider splitting into multiple writings * **Images**: Optimize before uploading (Cleve auto-compresses to 1MB max) * **Clear old drafts**: Periodically clean up IndexedDB for faster performance ## Troubleshooting ### Auto-Save Not Working 1. Check browser console for errors 2. Ensure IndexedDB is enabled in your browser 3. Verify you're not in incognito/private mode 4. Clear browser cache and reload ### Content Not Syncing 1. Check your internet connection 2. Look for the sync status indicator 3. Force a manual save with `Cmd/Ctrl + S` 4. Refresh the page to trigger sync ### Editor Lag or Slow Performance 1. Check document length (split very long docs) 2. Close unused browser tabs 3. Disable browser extensions that inject scripts 4. Update to the latest browser version ## Related Documentation Use AI to help write, edit, and improve your content. Build a connected knowledge graph with bidirectional links.
