# How usage works

> What uses your plan, how limits reset, and how to make your usage go further

Every time Cleve does work for you, it uses some of your plan's **usage**. Each plan includes a set amount of usage, measured over two windows: a **session limit** and a **weekly limit**. You can see both, as a percentage, at any time.

## What uses usage

Anything Cleve does with AI uses usage, including:

* Replies in chat
* Cleve's replies and edits when you ask it in a comment
* Edits Cleve makes to interactive blocks and diagrams
* Images Cleve creates or edits

Each reply uses an amount that reflects the work it took. A few things make a reply use more:

* **More capable models.** Premium models such as Claude Opus 5.5 use your usage faster than lighter models.
* **Longer and more complex work.** Reading many docs, writing a long draft, or making a series of edits uses more than a quick answer.
* **Long conversations.** Cleve rereads the conversation each time it replies, so very long chats use more per reply.
* **Images.** Higher-quality images use more than standard ones.

Voice dictation and meeting recording are covered by a separate allowance.

## Use Auto to get the most from your plan

**Auto** is the recommended model for most work. It chooses the model for you, balancing quality against how much usage each reply takes, so your plan goes further. See [Models and Auto](https://docs.cleve.ai/features/models.md).

## Session and weekly limits

| Limit | How long it lasts |
| - | - |
| **Session limit** | 5 hours |
| **Weekly limit** | 7 days |

* A window starts with your first message after the previous one ended, and resets when its time is up. It doesn't reset at a fixed time of day.
* The session limit lets you do a burst of heavy work in one sitting, while the weekly limit keeps that from using up your whole week.
* There is no separate monthly limit.

Higher plans include more usage in both windows. On a Team plan, each member has their own limits. See the [pricing page](https://www.cleve.ai/pricing) to compare plans.

## Check your usage

* **Settings → Billing** shows your **Session limit** and **Weekly limit**, each with the percentage used and when it resets. Before you've started a window, it shows **Starts with your next message**.
* **The usage ring** next to the send button shows whichever limit is closer to full. Click it to see both limits, then **See all** to open billing settings.

The bars turn amber at 80% and red when a limit is reached.

## When you reach a limit

If you reach either limit, Cleve tells you which one and when it resets, for example: *"You've used your session limit. Upgrade or wait for it to reset. Resets in 42 min."*

You can:

* **Wait** for the limit to reset, or
* **Upgrade** your plan from **Settings → Billing** for more usage.

Your docs stay fully available. You can keep reading, writing, and editing; only AI work pauses.

## Make your usage go further

* **Use Auto** unless you need a specific model.
* **Point Cleve at the right docs.** Mention them with `@` instead of asking Cleve to search your whole workspace.
* **Start a new chat for a new topic.** Short, focused conversations use less per reply than very long ones.
* **Save premium models for hard problems.** Use them when the extra reasoning really matters.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Only one reply runs at a time. If you send a message while Cleve is still working on another one, wait for it to finish or stop it first.
