Cleve saves versions of your docs automatically as you and your collaborators edit, and every time Cleve changes a doc. Use version history to see what changed, compare any two versions, and restore an earlier one.

Open version history

In a doc, click ··· (More actions) and choose Version history. The Version History panel opens beside the doc. Choose Hide version history from the same menu, or click the close button, to close it. The panel lists:
  • Current version at the top: the doc as it is now.
  • Earlier versions below it, newest first, grouped by day (Today, Yesterday, then by date).
Each version shows when it was saved and who made the change. When several similar autosaves happen in a row, they’re grouped together with a count, such as 3 similar versions. Click the arrow beside it to expand the group. If the doc is new, you’ll see “No version history yet” until your first edits are saved.

Types of versions

An icon beside each version shows what kind it is. Hover it to see the label. Versions you name show their name, with the time underneath. When edits you made offline are merged with changes made by others, Cleve also saves a copy of your offline version named Your offline edits · [date and time]. See Offline.

Preview and compare versions

Click any version to preview it. The doc is replaced by that version, read-only, until you pick Current version again or close the panel. At the bottom of the panel:
  • Highlight changes (on by default) highlights what was added and removed in the version you’re previewing.
  • Compare to chooses what it’s compared against. It starts at Previous version. Pick any other version, including named versions and AI edits, to see everything that changed between the two.

Restore a version

1

Pick the version

Click the version you want to go back to and check the preview.
2

Restore it

Click Restore at the bottom of the panel. Or open the version’s Version options (···) menu and choose Restore version.
3

Confirm

In Restore to this version?, click Restore. The doc is replaced with that version for everyone.
Restoring doesn’t delete anything. The version you had before restoring stays in version history, so you can restore it again if you change your mind.

Name a version

Name a version to mark a milestone, such as “Sent to client” or “Final draft”, so it’s easy to find later.
  1. Open the Version options (···) menu on the Current version or on any earlier version.
  2. Choose Name version, type a name, and press Enter.
To change a name, choose Rename version from the same menu. Names can be up to 80 characters, and each name can only be used once per doc.

Who can do what

Naming and restoring versions need a connection.

How long versions are kept

Cleve keeps the most recent 100 versions of each doc. When a doc goes past that, its oldest autosaves roll off. Named versions are kept, so name any version you want to be sure you can return to.

Undo Cleve’s edits

Every time Cleve edits a doc, it saves a Checkpoint before AI edit first, so you can always go back. Besides version history, you can undo an edit right where it happened:
  • In chat: under each edit, the Changes section shows what changed. Click Show to highlight the change in the doc, or Revert to put the doc back the way it was before that edit. See Chat with Cleve.
  • In comments: when Cleve addresses a comment by editing the doc, the thread shows What Cleve changed. Click Show to highlight the change, or Restore, then Restore doc, to return the doc to just before that fix. See Comments.
Reverting or restoring from chat or comments returns the whole doc to that point in time. Anything changed since, including edits by collaborators, is undone too. Those later changes are still in version history if you need them back.
