Cleve turns speech into text as you talk. You can dictate straight into a doc, send Cleve a voice message, or record a whole meeting and get a transcript beside your doc. Cleve can also read your docs aloud. The first time you use voice, your browser asks for permission to use the microphone.

Dictate into a doc

  1. Put your cursor where you want the text.
  2. Press ⌘⇧U / Ctrl+Shift+U, or click the microphone in the doc’s formatting toolbar (Dictate).
  3. Speak. A recorder bar shows Dictating into doc and a live caption of what it hears.
  4. Click Done.
Cleve inserts the text at the point where you started, split into paragraphs. You need edit access to the doc. If the doc is closed before you finish, Cleve offers to copy the transcript instead.

Talk to Cleve

  1. Press ⌘⇧Y / Ctrl+Shift+Y, or click the microphone next to the send button in chat (Voice to chat).
  2. Speak.
  3. Choose how to finish:
    • Done puts the text in the message box so you can check or add to it before sending.
    • Send to chat (the send icon on the recorder bar) sends it to Cleve straight away.

Record a meeting

Record meetings, calls, lectures, and workshops in a doc. The transcript is kept beside the doc rather than pasted into it, so your doc stays clean.
  1. Open the doc you want the meeting in.
  2. Click the ··· menu at the top of the doc and choose Record meeting.
  3. The Meeting transcript panel opens and shows the live transcript as people talk.
  4. Use the recorder bar to pause and resume. Click Done when the meeting ends.
The toolbar shows a red dot and a timer while you record. Afterwards, a Transcript button in the doc’s toolbar opens the panel again. A single recording can last up to 4 hours. Cleve warns you about 10 minutes before the limit and saves everything when it stops.

Use a meeting transcript

When the recording ends, the panel offers:
  • Insert into doc adds the full transcript to the doc under a Meeting transcript heading with the date.
  • Summarize into doc asks Cleve to add a short summary, the decisions made, and action items with owners to the doc.
  • Copy copies the transcript.
You can also ask Cleve about a meeting in chat at any time, for example “What did we decide about the launch date in today’s meeting?” Cleve reads the transcripts recorded in the doc. See Chat with Cleve. To record another meeting in the same doc, click Record again in the panel. Each recording is kept separately.
Everyone who can open the doc can read its meeting transcripts. Only the person who recorded a meeting can download its audio, re-transcribe it, or delete it.

While you’re recording

  • One recording at a time. Finish the current recording before starting another, in this tab or any other.
  • Recording options (the ··· on the recorder bar) lets you show or hide the live transcript, switch Microphone, change the Language for your next recording, or Discard the recording.
  • If your connection drops, Cleve keeps recording and fills in the missing parts of the transcript when you finish.
  • If the page closes mid-recording, your audio is saved on the device. Next time you open Cleve, it asks Finish your interrupted recording? and offers Finish & transcribe, Download audio, or Discard.
  • If you hear nothing back, check the microphone. Cleve warns you when it can’t hear anything.

Choose a transcription language

Go to Settings → Voice and choose a Language.
  • Auto-detect (the default) handles English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, and Dutch, even when speakers mix them.
  • For any other language, pick it from the list.
You can also change the language for your next recording from the recorder bar’s Recording options. To fix a meeting transcribed in the wrong language, open the recording’s ··· menu in the transcript panel and choose Re-transcribe in….

Your recordings

Settings → Voice lists your recent recordings in the current workspace, from any device: dictations, voice messages, and meetings. For each one you can:
  • Copy the transcript
  • Open doc to go to the doc it was recorded in
  • Download the Audio
  • Retry a transcript that couldn’t be finished
  • Delete the recording
Deleting a recording removes its transcript and audio. Text you already inserted into a doc or chat stays.

How long recordings are kept

  • Audio is kept for 7 days, so you can download it or re-transcribe it. After that it’s deleted automatically.
  • Transcripts are kept until you delete them. Deleting a doc also deletes the meeting transcripts recorded in it.

Read a doc aloud

  1. Click the ··· menu at the top of the doc and choose Read aloud.
  2. Cleve highlights the sentence it will start from: the one under your cursor. Click elsewhere in the doc to start somewhere else, or select text to read only that part.
  3. Press play.
  • Voice lets you choose one of Cleve’s AI voices, or a System voice from your device.
  • Speed goes from 0.75× to 2×.
  • With an AI voice, you can also Download audio.
For a very long doc, Cleve reads the first part.

Voice on your phone

Dictation and voice to chat work in the mobile layout too. The microphone stays in the doc’s formatting toolbar and next to the send button in chat. Record meeting opens the transcript in a sheet at the bottom of the screen. See Cleve on mobile.

Voice usage

Transcription and AI read-aloud voices use a voice allowance that’s separate from your chat usage. When you’re close to the end of it, the recorder shows how many minutes are left. If you reach your limit during a recording, Cleve keeps recording and saves your audio. You can upgrade and then transcribe the rest with Transcribe the rest in Settings → Voice. See the pricing page for what each plan includes.
